Successful events
are created by promoting and building up the excitement and
anticipation of the event. Think about a vacation you've taken
or a concert you attended. Your advanced perceived
experiences created an emotional excitement within
you. And when it finally arrived it was like fulfilling
a dream or reaching your goal. Comedy hypnosis, by its
very nature immediately creates an intrigue across a campus.
The
mere mention of hypnosis instantly conjures up images of
students and their friends getting on stage and doing
“crazy” and “silly” things.
Face it; it’s a basic human instinct to enjoy seeing
other people in awkward situations, especially our friends.
If you don’t think so, consider the popularity of
reality television shows like “Survivor” or “American
Idol”.
So the idea of seeing their friends on stage creating
an opportunity upon which to laugh with them is extremely
appealing (it’s equivalent to a frat party, but without the
alcohol and all the potential liability associated with it).
Historically,
just like every other campus entertainer, I thought it was
enough to provide you with show posters to put up around
campus... but that's not promotion. That's like throwing
a bucket of water on a forest fire. Many of the campuses
I perform at have anywhere from 600 to 25,000 students.
And 20 or 30 posters put up in student common areas plastered
amongst every other advertisement 'screaming' for
students' attention isn't effective promotion. It's said
that experience is the greatest teacher and that's how I
learned this harsh reality.
From
my own personal experience at a campus in Michigan, I was
introduced on stage to a completely empty outdoor
amphitheater; when I say empty, I mean there wasn’t one
person in a seat, literally. You
see, I was performing during a summer campus festival and the
event coordinator felt that I’d attract a crowd; obviously
she thought she was hiring a juggler or magician.
These are entertainers who can perform with the props
they bring.
Unfortunately, my props are people.
The good news is that by the end of the show we had
over 200 people in the amphitheater glued to their chairs.
It was then that I realized that I needed to find a way
